How we support our team to focus on outcomes over output

Here at Simply Wall St, we know that everyone is unique

...

Everyone has their own personal style of work, different productive hours, values flexibility, and enjoys the autonomy of their schedule to manage their workdays according to their own respective needs and wants.

That’s why, our approach to flexible working is designed to accommodate employees' needs, while also maximising what we as a company can achieve through our work.

We focus on outcomes over output.

As a fast-growing startup, we’re constantly building new products, working on innovations and pursuing initiatives to help us achieve our mission of empowering investors to make better decisions. To do this, we as a company and our internal teams have objectives we want to achieve and we monitor key results that will help us get there. We set the bar high for ourselves, and we’re striving each day to exceed our own expectations.

In doing this, we don’t focus on an employee’s output — i.e. time clocked sitting at the desk. Instead, we monitor the results. The approach is much more aligned with allowing flexibility into one’s work schedule because as mentioned, everyone works differently.

Through internal surveys, our employees have highlighted that flexibility is one of the best perks and benefits of working here.

We want you to work where and when you’re most effective. Maybe you’re an early bird, or a night owl. Maybe you prefer the office, or working from a van.
To support you both professionally and personally, we believe flexibility is fundamental to our ways of working

The initiatives that help us focus on outcomes over output

  1. Bueller (Personal) days: 4 extra paid days off per year of your choice;

  2. Work overseas: We offer all employees the opportunity to work overseas for up to 3 months;

  3. No meeting Mondays: More time for deep work;

  4. Simply Stop Fri-yaysafternoons: On Fridays we finish at 2:30pm to enjoy a long weekend;Work from anywhere: We offer all employees the opportunity to work overseas for up to 3 months;

  5. Flexible hours: Set your own schedule, while meeting some core hours (10am-2pm Sydney timeAEST);

  6. Bring your dog to work! We love dogs, they make everything better!

Flexibility: A double-edged sword ⚔️

Working this way can be incredible. You can go for a long lunch on a sunny day, you can meet your children after school, you can wake up later or log off earlier. It allows you to have the flexibility that suits your life best.

...

  • Be mindful: As a remote worker, you have a responsibility to think of others around the world when you book your meetings. Don't book meetings at 8am just because you’re an early-riser, ask others what may work and find a solution that is respectful to the needs of the group.

  • Be consistent: To the best of your ability, try to maintain a somewhat regular schedule, or become very good at communicating your fluctuations.

Our teams love the flexibility that these initiatives offer and the lifestyle that it allows them to live. Here’s what some of them have to say about the flexibility:

Al — Founder and CEO:

Letting our team work how and where they want to changes everything, whether it’s flexibility around family or the freedom to live where you want. Traditionally people always had to make trade-offs with work and life, we want the opposite to be true!
