🧗🏻♀️ Engineering Career Track
There are two Engineering tracks at Simply Wall St: Individual Contributor track and Engineering Manager track.
The Engineering Manager Track
Consists of Engineers who act as team leads and focus on people and team management and development. There are a number of levels that correspond to the managerial seniority of our engineering managers and reflect the increasing impact, scope and responsibilities for each level.
Engineer Managers are still very hands-on so there’s a minimum requirement that they hit at least the Senior Engineer level, but we don’t expect them to be the strongest engineering in their team. Their main focus is around team and people management.
The Individual Contributor Track
Consists of Software Engineers who are focused on personal contribution to our product. There are a number of levels (from Junior Engineer to Principal Engineer) that correspond to the technical seniority of our engineers and reflects the increasing impact, scope and responsibilities for each level within Simply Wall St engineering function.
The Engineering Feature Lead role
Consists of Software Engineers on the IC track who for a specific amount of time take technical leadership over a project or workstream with multiple engineers. This role is temporary. These projects will require a temporary team to be assembled to deliver that specific feature. The Engineering Lead will be responsible for delivering such work.
Engineering Leads are still part of the Individual Contributor Track therefore they won’t be responsible for people management.
Individual Contributor vs Manager. Which way to go?
Engineering manager track isn’t necessarily better than Individual Contributor. They have different focus areas and any Engineer at Simply Wall St should feel that they can keep growing in the organisation whichever track they decide to follow. Therefore, we recommend you to decide which track to go down based on the type of work you enjoy doing as there’s enough scope for each track to grow, learn and have a positive impact within the business.
In terms of compensation, both tracks run in parallel and compensation packages are of a similar level.
